Honji Fertility Center gives hope to Filipino family dreams through IVF

In the Philippines, a survey conducted by Synovate revealed that one in every 10 couples has infertility problems in 100 households.

According to the survey, the top three areas of the highest infertility concerns came from GMA (Greater Manila Area) at 10.7 percent; Davao at 5 percent, and Cebu 3.8 percent. Also highlighted from the result was 30 percent of infertility causes came from women, 30 percent in men, and 10 percent combined, 25 percent unexplained, and 5 percent for other factors.

For many couples, having a child is crucial to their relationship. In a study published at USNews.com, it revealed that infertile couples are three times more likely to divorce or end cohabitation with their partner than those who do.

“They have good husbands, but they want to have a child. They cry every month. Some patients have depression. At 45-47 years old, they still want to have babies. In their dreams, they are carrying a child in their arms,” said Dr. Chang Hung Ji, director of Honji Fertility Center, who imparted an alternative solution to challenged Filipino couples with in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF, the process of manually combining the egg and sperm in a laboratory dish before assisted transfer to the uterus, challenged couples are able to increase pregnancy percentage.

Honji Fertility Center does not only provide regular IVF procedures. Instead, the clinic offers natural cycle and mild stimulation IVF which increases the success rate up to 40 percent.

Understanding IVF

The Natural Cycle and Mild Stimulation IVF is carried out within the second and 14th day of a natural menstrual cycle without the use of heavy fertility drugs. On the 12th to 15th day of the menstrual cycle, eggs naturally produced by the body will be retrieved for sperm fertilization. The embryo will then be transferred into the wife’s womb to develop.

This type of treatment is more affordable and safer than other forms of IVF. After implantation, a pregnancy test will be done on the 12th to 14th day to check for the success of the procedure. Unsuccessful transplants are repeated depending on the clinical condition of the patients.

Interested Filipino couples who want to undergo IVF procedures at Honji Fertility Center in Taiwan need to prepare travel documents such as passport, immigration documents and visa; they also need to submit a copy of their valid IDs, marriage certificate, and supporting documents, which may be requested from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices in the Philippines.

Aside from travel documents, the wife may need to undergo several examinations from her attending obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) to understand the conditions of her body. The results must be submitted to the center for preliminary consultation and receive the proper preparation instructions prior to actual IVF procedure.

Making the baby dreams possible

Aside from the natural IVF procedures, the center also offers egg and sperm donations wherein couples who have problems with their egg and sperm may opt to use donated cells. The donated cells may be fertilized prior to implantation to the uterus.

Same IVF procedure applies with additional procedures such as donor selection, blood tests for the donor (including HIV, syphilis, AMH, E2, P4, FSH, and LH inspection), course description, vaginal ultrasound, sperm inspection and freezing of sperm and/or egg (abstinence is recommended before the first visit), physician consultation, and prescriptions, whichever are needed. Honji’s success rate of this alternative procedure is also high that even older couples can expect positive results.

Towards a less invasive treatment for challenged couples

According to Dr. Chang Hung Ji, most couples, especially women, quit their job almost 99 percent of the time just to exert more efforts in trying to conceive. He mentioned many possible side effects of regular IVF procedures on the women and its effect on their lifestyle.

That’s why Dr. Chang Hung Ji developed the Honji’s way of natural cycle and mild stimulation IVF where minimal hormone injections are provided for patients to avoid discomfort. He believes that lesser drug treatments equate to higher conception success rate.

”In my team, we don’t use a lot of injections. I always tell my patients, never to quit their jobs and never change their lifestyles. Since I use very mild interventions, egg retrieval does not need anesthesia. And with the low-dose drug injection, there is lesser chances of suffering from possible side effects and the cost becomes more affordable that the regular IVF,” he said.

It is hoped that with Honji’s modern and natural assisted reproduction technologies opening its door to the Philippines, Filipino couples who are long been struggling with infertility may now have their chance to fulfill their family dreams.
